Dasoju Sravan flags RTI failures, seeks transparency

Hyderabad: BRS MLC Dasoju Sravan raised RTI failures in the State Legislative Council, accusing the government of denying public access to key information.

According to Dasoju Sravan, the government failed to uphold its promise of transparency. The Right to Information system, he said, was not functioning effectively.

He pointed out that authorities must maintain a proper RTI portal. However, key Government Orders were missing from the website, he added.

Instead of uploading crucial GOs related to tenders and fund allocations, departments placed only routine documents online. Many important orders were marked “confidential,” he said.

As a result, Dasoju Sravan said government functioning appeared opaque. This, he argued, denied citizens their right to access information.

Citing available data, he said 95 to 98 percent of RTI applications remained pending in several departments. Therefore, authorities failed to meet their legal obligations.

On the digital front, Dasoju Sravan said the RTI portal lacked proper implementation. Despite having around 12,000 Public Information Officers, fewer than 200 departments joined the platform.

Calling for immediate action, he urged the government to onboard all departments. This step, he said, would ensure easier access to information.

He also flagged delays faced by elected representatives. Requests sent to agencies like HMDA, GHMC and HYDRA did not receive responses.

Officials, he added, neither answered phone calls nor replied to letters. In several cases, they failed to issue acknowledgement receipts.

Such practices violated the spirit of the Representation of the People Act, he said. Consequently, this inaction hindered elected representatives from performing their duties.

Dasoju Sravan said several MLCs faced similar issues. Treating Council members with disregard was not acceptable, he added.

He urged the Council Chairman to intervene. He asked the Chair to direct the government to ensure proper RTI implementation.
