Damodar Rajanarasimha unveils statues in Chevella, hails social justice

Hyderabad: Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha Chevella’s visit saw the unveiling of statues of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, Dr B.R. Ambedkar and Babu Jagjivan Ram at Nawabpet mandal headquarters.

He attended the event along with Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar and local MLA Kale Yadaiah. The leaders inaugurated the statues in the Chevella constituency.

Addressing the gathering, the minister extended greetings on Ambedkar Jayanti. He said remembering leaders who fought for equality, justice and dignity remains essential.

He said Indian society once faced deep-rooted caste discrimination and untouchability. However, reformers such as Gautama Buddha and Basaveshwara challenged these inequalities and promoted human values.

The minister highlighted the role of Jyotirao Phule in fighting caste discrimination and promoting education. Moreover, he said Phule laid the foundation for women’s empowerment by establishing schools for girls.

He also spoke about Dr B.R. Ambedkar, who rose through education despite discrimination and later drafted the Constitution. According to him, Ambedkar ensured equality, liberty and justice for all citizens.

Meanwhile, referring to Babu Jagjivan Ram, he said the leader worked for the upliftment of marginalised communities and rose to key positions in public life.

The minister said reservations for SC, ST and backward classes resulted from long struggles for social justice. However, he noted that benefits did not reach all sections equally.

In addition, he said the Congress government initiated SC sub-categorisation after coming to power in 2023. Following the Supreme Court verdict in August 2024, the state implemented the classification based on empirical data.

He added that the move created opportunities for the most backward communities among SCs. Therefore, students from these groups have started securing seats in medicine and engineering.

At the same time, he said the policy would also improve representation in government jobs. He described it as a step towards balanced and inclusive development.

Finally, the minister said the statues unveiled at Nawabpet symbolise the continuing struggle for equality.
