Hyderabad: Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha inaugurated advanced cancer treatment Linear Accelerator Radiotherapy (LINAC) services at NIMS, strengthening oncology care in the state.
He launched the Linear Accelerator facility built at a cost of around ₹33 crore. Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, Rajya Sabha MP Anil Kumar Yadav, and Health Secretary Christina Z Chongthu attended the programme.
The minister also launched a women’s cancer screening camp at the hospital. He said the new system would enable precise radiation therapy for cancer patients.
Damodar Raja Narasimha expands cancer care and screening services
He said the LINAC system targets tumours while protecting healthy tissue. He added that the TrueBeam technology allows faster treatment with improved outcomes.
Further, he said the state was expanding advanced medical facilities as cancer cases rise. He noted that Telangana records nearly 55,000 to 60,000 new cancer cases every year.
He stressed that early detection can cure cancer completely. Therefore, the government is increasing awareness and screening programmes.
He said authorities are setting up day-care cancer centres in all district headquarters. Meanwhile, they have already introduced chemotherapy services in remote areas like Mulugu and Adilabad.
In addition, he said health teams are conducting screenings for 46 lakh self-help group women. He added that the new screening camp at NIMS will strengthen early diagnosis efforts.
He said the government is implementing HPV vaccination across the state. As a result, girls aged 14 to 15 are receiving free vaccines to prevent cervical cancer.
Further, he announced that the state would notify cancer as a reportable disease. This step will help maintain a registry and improve planning based on accurate data.
He said the government is strengthening public hospitals to deliver advanced treatment to the poor. At the same time, it is expanding palliative care services across all government hospitals.
He said the fight against cancer requires collective effort and public participation along with government action.
