Hyderabad: A man in Telangana lost ₹22 lakh after cybercriminals used an AI scam video that appeared to show Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman promoting an investment scheme. He watched the clip on social media and believed the voice and visuals were real.
The edited video claimed that viewers could earn high profits through a platform named Exventer. It also carried a link. The man clicked it and soon received a WhatsApp message from someone who claimed to represent Exventer. The caller pushed him to invest money and promised quick returns.
AI scam video prompts police probe
The victim trusted the claim and transferred funds in several rounds. He realised the scam only after the promised profits never appeared. He then approached cybercrime officials and filed a complaint.
Police registered a case and began an investigation into the fraud. Officers said the gang used AI tools to impersonate public figures and lure investors.
