Cyberabad drunk and drive cases: 240 booked in weekend checks

Hyderabad: The Cyberabad Traffic Police registered 240 Cyberabad drunk and drive cases during weekend enforcement checks and decided to produce all offenders before the court.

Officials carried out the special drive across key locations to curb driving under the influence. As a result, the Cyberabad drunk and drive cases involved multiple categories of vehicles.

Police booked 193 two-wheeler riders in the drive. In addition, they registered nine cases involving three-wheelers and 38 cases involving four-wheelers. However, they did not detect any violations involving heavy vehicles.

Authorities grouped offenders based on blood alcohol concentration levels. A total of 199 offenders recorded BAC levels between 36 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml. Meanwhile, 32 offenders recorded levels between 201 mg/100 ml and 300 mg/100 ml. Another nine offenders fell in the 301 mg/100 ml to 550 mg/100 ml range.

Cyberabad drunk and drive cases show BAC severity

Officials said all those booked in the Cyberabad drunk and drive cases would appear before the court. They reiterated that drunk driving remained a serious offence with strict punishment.

Police warned that any person causing a fatal accident while intoxicated would face severe charges. Such cases would be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. This section deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and carries a maximum punishment of 10 years’ imprisonment along with a fine.

Moreover, officials stressed that regular enforcement would continue to deter violations. They said the Cyberabad drunk and drive cases reflected ongoing efforts to improve road safety.

Police also shared details of recent court disposals linked to drunk driving violations. Between April 6 and April 11, courts disposed of 86 cases.

Among these, two offenders received both fine and jail sentences. One offender received a fine along with social service. Meanwhile, 83 offenders were penalised with fines only.

Officials said these outcomes showed a graded approach to punishment. They added that Cyberabad drunk and drive cases would remain a focus for enforcement drives.
