Hyderabad: To reduce plastic use at the source, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has urged citizens to adopt sustainable alternatives through simple daily habits.
During routine waste operations, GHMC teams regularly see large volumes of plastic at transfer stations. Carry bags, food covers, disposable containers, and packaging material dominate the waste. Officials say everyday consumption drives most of this plastic and residents can prevent it before disposal.
Instead of focusing only on waste handling, the civic body now stresses prevention. It has encouraged residents to adopt easy alternatives at home, at work, and while travelling.
Simple ways to reduce plastic use
GHMC has advised people to carry jute or cloth bags instead of plastic covers. It has also urged the use of steel or reusable tiffin boxes for office, school, and travel. Officials recommend refillable bottles over single-use plastic and suggest choosing durable materials such as steel, glass, or paper.
These choices can keep plastic off roads, drains, landfills, and transfer stations. According to the civic body, such steps will protect land and water resources and help ensure a cleaner city.
GHMC has called on NGOs, resident welfare associations, institutions, and citizens to expand plastic-reduction awareness through community outreach and social media engagement.
#Plastic: Reduce What We Use, Replace What We Can
Plastic has made daily life easier, but single-use plastic is largely avoidable. Across cities, the focus is shifting from only managing waste to reducing plastic at the source through simple daily habits.
