Hyderabad: Covid-19 appears to be making a quiet return across parts of India, with Maharashtra and Karnataka reporting new infections and fatalities over the weekend.
In Thane, a 21-year-old man succumbed to the virus at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital. Officials said he had been admitted on May 22 with complications linked to diabetes and tested positive for Covid the following night. He passed away shortly thereafter, making it the first Covid fatality in Thane in recent weeks.
The Thane Municipal Corporation confirmed eight new cases on Sunday, pushing the city’s active caseload to 18. While authorities stressed that the emerging variant doesn’t appear to be more dangerous, they urged those with symptoms to get tested promptly and seek treatment. “There’s no cause for panic. The situation is under control,” said a senior civic official.
Karnataka, too, is witnessing a mild uptick in infections, with 38 new cases recorded—32 of them in Bengaluru alone. The state’s health department expressed concern after an 84-year-old man being treated in a Bengaluru hospital died due to organ failure. He had tested positive for Covid shortly after being admitted, with his condition deteriorating rapidly thereafter.
Health officials in both states are closely monitoring the spread but have ruled out any immediate alarm. Public advisories have been issued encouraging early testing and caution, particularly among those with pre-existing conditions.
