Commissioner warns against online betting after constable’s suicide

Hyderabad: Hyderabad City Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar on Sunday cautioned people against online betting after a police constable allegedly took his own life due to financial distress linked to it.

Sajjanar, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), urged people not to resort to extreme steps when facing difficulties. “Suicide is not a solution,” he wrote, adding that impulsive decisions can destroy families dependent on them. His post came with the hashtag #SayNoToBettingApps and included a news clipping about the constable’s death.

According to Uppal police, constable D Srikanth, 42, attached to the Malakpet police station, reportedly ended his life at his home in Peerzadiguda on Friday night. Srikanth, who joined the force in 2009, was allegedly under pressure after losing money to online betting apps.

Investigators said Srikanth had recently borrowed money and was facing harassment from lenders. His family members told police that financial stress drove him to take the extreme step. A case was registered, and an investigation is underway.
