Hyderabad: Cyberabad Municipal Corporation Commissioner Srijana and HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath on Monday conducted a joint floodwater diversion inspection at Sunnam Lake in Madhapur and surrounding areas of Thammidikunta to strengthen urban flood management.
The inspection focused on directing floodwater into lakes through scientifically designed feeder channels and inlet systems. Officials reviewed ongoing measures aimed at improving lake rejuvenation and stormwater handling.
During the floodwater diversion inspection, the Commissioners assessed plans to channel floodwater from Borabanda Basti near Sunnam Lake and N.R.R. Puram into the lake through designated inlets. They examined requirements to ensure efficient inflow during heavy rains.
They also held detailed discussions on strengthening canal connections to maintain uninterrupted stormwater flow into the lakes. Officials emphasised the need for integrated drainage systems to avoid flooding in surrounding areas.
Floodwater diversion inspection focuses on lake systems
The Commissioners reviewed key technical aspects during the visit. They examined plans to divert sewage through underground pipelines to prevent contamination of lakes. They also stressed the importance of ensuring that rainwater flows directly into lakes during the monsoon.
In addition, they assessed infrastructure constraints affecting drainage works. These included road expansion under high-tension power lines between Madhapur and Borabanda. They also reviewed steps to strengthen outlet canals for safe discharge when lakes reach full capacity.
The floodwater diversion inspection further covered Thammidikunta Lake, which receives runoff from Kondapur, IT Hub, Shilparamam, and Metal Charminar areas. Officials evaluated the current drainage network and identified gaps in floodwater routing.
They instructed teams to establish proper canal connectivity to direct floodwater into Thammidikunta through inlets. They also called for optimal use of inlets along Metal Charminar Road and proposed additional flood channels under the Strategic Nala Development Programme where necessary.
Floodwater diversion inspection stresses encroachment removal
The Commissioners emphasised the removal of encroachments around Sunnam Lake and Thammidikunta. They also directed expansion and strengthening of lake infrastructure to enhance flood-carrying capacity.
They stated that the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation would continue implementing sustainable drainage solutions. They added that such measures would improve resilience to monsoon-related challenges through ongoing floodwater diversion inspection efforts.
