CM Revanth pushes parental care bill to prevent abandonment of parents

Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy said the government introduced the parental care bill to ensure that no parent faces abandonment. The parental care bill seeks to enforce responsibility among children and protect elderly citizens.
Speaking in the Assembly on the legislation introduced by Minister Adluri Lakshman Kumar, the Chief Minister said the bill reflects a strong commitment to safeguard parents in old age. Moreover, he said the law aims to act as a deterrent against neglect.
He expressed concern over changing social values. In addition, he said people are prioritising wealth over relationships, leading to distress among elderly parents.

Parental care bill aims to enforce responsibility and dignity

The Chief Minister said India already has laws protecting children and women. However, he noted that existing provisions for senior citizens have not fully prevented neglect.
He said it is unfortunate that some individuals fail to care for parents during their lifetime. Meanwhile, disputes over property arise after their death.
Revanth Reddy cited the example of Shravan Kumar to highlight ideal values of parental care. Furthermore, he said such values would reduce the need for legal intervention.
He also referred to industrialist Vijaypat Singhania’s experience to underline risks faced by elderly parents. In addition, he said unconditional transfer of assets can leave parents vulnerable.
The Chief Minister said joint family systems earlier ensured support for parents. However, he noted that smaller families have reduced this sense of responsibility.
He stressed that those neglecting parents must face social accountability. Consequently, he said the bill aims to build awareness and responsibility.
He clarified that the law may not solve every issue. Nevertheless, it will provide justice and confidence to elderly citizens.
Revanth Reddy said the bill applies to government employees, private employees and public representatives. He urged all parties to support the legislation unanimously in the Assembly.
