Tension at Chalo Hyd as ASHA workers clash with police

Hyderabad: Tension erupted during the Chalo Hyd ASHA workers protest as thousands staged a dharna at the Koti Commissioner’s Office demanding immediate redressal of their grievances.

The workers sought payment of pending January salaries and a fixed monthly pay of ₹18,000. They also demanded adequate budget allocation in the upcoming Assembly session to resolve long-pending issues.

Despite heavy restrictions and reported arrests in several districts, large numbers of Chalo Hyd ASHA workers reached the protest venue. A scuffle broke out between the protesters and police personnel. Consequently, several workers sustained injuries during the confrontation.

Protesters alleged that police dragged women workers, leading to torn clothes and some falling unconscious. The dharna continued from 12 noon to 3 pm amid heightened tension in the area.

Chalo Hyd ASHA workers warn of intensified agitation

Union leaders criticised the state government for not addressing their demands. They accused authorities of suppressing their democratic right to protest. Moreover, they said the government was unwilling to engage in dialogue.

The leaders warned that the Chalo Hyd ASHA workers would intensify their agitation if their issues remain unresolved. They reiterated that regular salaries and fair remuneration are essential for frontline health workers.

Prominent participants included ASHA Union CITU State President P. Jayalakshmi, General Secretary R. Neela Devi and Treasurer P. Gangamani. CITU State Secretary J. Venkatesh and other union leaders also joined the protest.
