Hyderabad: The Centre has approved an additional 40,000 metric tonnes of urea for Telangana, following a request from state agriculture minister Tummala Nageswara Rao. With this, the total allocation for the state now stands at 80,000 metric tonnes.
The approval was issued through formal orders on Monday evening. The new allotment supplements the earlier allocation of 40,000 metric tonnes.
Minister Rao, along with Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, held discussions with central officials to resolve the growing shortage. The request came amid rising concerns from farmers across districts, where protests had broken out due to lack of urea supply.
Officials said the shortage was caused by a significant increase in the sown area this year compared to last. Farmers across several regions have been demanding timely access to fertilizers to prevent disruption to crop cycles.
The additional allotment is expected to ease the pressure on agriculture input supply chains across the state.
