Hyderabad: The Centre alerted all States following reports of the Khamenei death amid escalating Israel–US–Iran hostilities, warning of possible communal tensions and protests across the country.

The Union Home Ministry wrote to State police departments, directing them to remain vigilant in view of the prevailing war-like situation in West Asia. Officials cautioned that certain elements could attempt to trigger unrest.

The Ministry instructed police to monitor religious gatherings and places of worship. It warned that radical speakers sympathetic to Iran could attempt provocative speeches. Therefore, authorities must step up surveillance and preventive action.

The Centre also asked States to strengthen coordination among intelligence agencies. Officials must enhance intelligence sharing and take pre-emptive measures to prevent any breach of law and order.

Meanwhile, protests erupted in several cities following the Khamenei death. Demonstrations were reported in Hyderabad, parts of Karnataka, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

Authorities fear that miscreants could exploit these protests to incite violence. Consequently, security agencies have tightened vigilance in sensitive areas.

Separately, the Centre is closely monitoring developments in West Asia. Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security on Sunday night to review the situation.
