Ceiling collapse triggers safety scare at MGM Hospital in Warangal

Hyderabad: A ceiling fragment collapsed at the men’s surgical ward of MGM Hospital in Warangal, narrowly missing patients and staff.

The debris fell from the slab of the old building but caused no injuries as the area happened to be empty at the time. Staff said the ward has suffered repeated structural failures, including previous incidents where falling pieces injured patients.

Patients alleged that such mishaps have become routine during the monsoon season, with no serious repair work being taken up by hospital authorities. According to them, officials have failed to act despite recurring complaints about the deteriorating structure.

Criticism has also mounted over the administration’s perceived indifference, as a new multi-specialty hospital is already under construction in the city. Locals questioned whether repairs at MGM are being deliberately sidelined in light of the new facility.

The ceiling collapse at MGM Hospital occurred just as members of the state-run hospital monitoring committee were inspecting the premises—an incident that’s put a fresh spotlight on the facility’s worsening infrastructure.

MGM Hospital, which handles around 1,800 outpatients and 1,200 inpatients daily, serves as a critical referral centre for six districts in northern Telangana. Although it is officially a 1,000-bed hospital, the patient load often exceeds its capacity, leading to chronic shortages in space and basic infrastructure.
