Hyderabad: Telangana BJP president N. Ramchander Rao on Saturday accused the Congress government of spreading misinformation after it passed a resolution opposing the VB–G RAM G Act.
Addressing the media, Ramchander Rao said the Congress had implemented employment schemes earlier without invoking Mahatma Gandhi’s name. However, he alleged that the party renamed NREGA as MGNREGA in 2009 for electoral gains. Further, he cited remarks made by Rahul Gandhi in 2021 questioning the relevance of MNREGA, which he said exposed the Congress party’s double standards.
VB–G RAM G Act expands rural employment scope
Explaining the provisions of the VB–G RAM G Act, Ramchander Rao said the legislation increased guaranteed employment from 100 to 125 days. Moreover, he said it strengthened the unemployment allowance and compensation for delayed wage payments.
He added that the Act ensured decentralised planning through Gram Panchayats and Gram Sabhas. Additionally, at least 50 per cent of works would be executed locally. The focus areas, he said, included water conservation, infrastructure creation, livelihood generation and disaster resilience. He also noted that the Act contained special provisions for women and self-help groups.
Highlighting transparency measures, Ramchander Rao said the Act mandated social audits, biometric attendance and GIS-based verification. Furthermore, he said technology-driven monitoring systems would help prevent fraud.
Calling the legislation a forward-looking rural reform, Ramchander Rao said it aligned with the vision of “Viksit Bharat @ 2047”. Therefore, he urged the Congress to introspect on its policy record instead of indulging in political theatrics.
