Hyderabad: Police foiled a BJP-led Chalo Assembly protest in Basheerbagh on Tuesday, detaining several activists after tensions escalated during the march.
The protest, led by BJP MLA Payal Shankar, sought justice for persons with disabilities. Demonstrators marched from the Basheerbagh flyover towards the Assembly, demanding implementation of election promises, including enhanced pensions and welfare measures.
However, heavy police deployment blocked the rally midway. As a result, a scuffle broke out between protesters and police personnel when activists attempted to move forward.
Several BJP workers were taken into custody and shifted to nearby police stations to prevent further escalation. Officials said the action was taken to maintain law and order in the area.

During the Chalo Assembly protest, Payal Shankar accused the state government of failing to fulfil commitments made to persons with disabilities. He demanded immediate release of enhanced pensions to eligible beneficiaries.
He also warned that the agitation would continue if the government did not act on its assurances. According to him, the protest reflected growing dissatisfaction among affected groups.
Party leaders said the movement would intensify in the coming days to press for welfare measures. They added that the fight for disability rights would continue until demands were addressed.
