BJP candidate’s suicide leads to postponement of Makthal municipal ward poll

Hyderabad: The suicide of a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate ahead of polling forced authorities to postpone the municipal election in Ward No. 6 of Makthal municipality in Narayanpet district.

The deceased, Mahadevappa (48), hailed from Chandapur village and contested as the BJP candidate from the ward. He died by suicide by hanging at his residence in the early hours of Tuesday. Police registered a case and started an investigation.

Reacting to the incident, BJP Telangana president Ramchander Rao said the party was deeply shaken by the loss. He termed the incident tragic and conveyed his condolences to Mahadevappa’s family.

Suicide leads to ward poll postponement

Following the death, Returning Officer Shivaiah announced the postponement of the Ward No. 6 election. He said election rules mandate postponement when a recognised party candidate dies during the poll process.

The Returning Officer added that the State Election Commission would announce a fresh poll schedule soon. He also issued written orders confirming the postponement.

Meanwhile, police continued their probe to establish the reasons behind the suicide, which has cast a shadow over the municipal elections in Makthal.
