BIS seizes fake mobile chargers in Sultan Bazaar raid

Hyderabad: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) on Tuesday seized a stockpile of counterfeit mobile chargers during a search operation at a mobile accessories and electronics store in Sultan Bazaar, Koti, for violation of the BIS Act, 2016.

Led by BIS Hyderabad officials under the direction of P.V. Srikanth and supervised by directors T. Sujatha and Rakesh Tanneeru, the team found mobile chargers bearing fake BIS Registration Marks being stored and offered for sale. The products lacked valid BIS certification, despite falling under mandatory Quality Control Orders issued by the Government of India.

BIS confirmed the seizure as a violation of Section 17 of the BIS Act, 2016, which bars the sale or distribution of QCO-regulated goods without certification. Offenders face penalties starting at ₹2 lakh or imprisonment up to two years for first offences, and fines up to ₹5 lakh or 10 times the product value for repeated violations. The offence is cognizable.

Legal proceedings have been initiated against the shop owner.

BIS urged consumers to verify product authenticity using the BIS Care app and report misuse of standard marks including the ISI Mark, BIS Registration Mark, and BIS Hallmark through the app or via official communication channels. The identity of complainants will remain confidential.

The agency also appealed to manufacturers, importers, and online platforms to comply with BIS certification norms to prevent deceptive trade practices.
