BC JAC bandh halts RTC buses across Telangana, cab fares skyrocket

Hyderabad: The BC JAC bandh demanding a fair share in reservations completely disrupted public transport across Telangana on Saturday. From early morning, BC organisations launched protests in front of RTC depots in every district.

RTC bus services halted statewide

Protesters blocked buses from leaving depots, and as a result, all RTC bus operations came to a halt. In Hyderabad, not a single bus moved out of the depots. Consequently, thousands of commuters and officegoers faced major travel disruptions.

Meanwhile, long queues formed at metro stations and auto stands as people searched for alternatives. Many passengers waited for hours, hoping for some form of transport to resume.

Private cab and auto fares soar amid bandh

Taking advantage of the bandh, private cab and auto drivers began charging excessive fares. Many commuters, however, complained that drivers demanded double the normal rate. As a result, travel within the city became extremely costly.

Emergency service staff who depended on cabs to reach hospitals and offices also suffered. They said they were shocked by the inflated prices. At Uppal Ring Road, for instance, drivers charged ₹700 for a trip to Hanamkonda that usually costs ₹300.

In addition, autos that had seen low demand because of the RTC free travel scheme suddenly witnessed brisk business. Therefore, the city’s streets filled again with autos catering to the heavy passenger rush.

Holiday rush worsens transport chaos

Furthermore, the bandh coincided with the weekend and the upcoming Diwali festival, creating additional pressure on transport. Consequently, travel costs increased sharply. People trying to reach their hometowns said private operators exploited the situation.

Even so, several passengers tried to negotiate, but most drivers refused to lower prices. Many families postponed their plans due to soaring fares. Meanwhile, intercity cab prices rose steeply, leaving travellers frustrated.
