BC Commission reviews progress of student caste data collection

Hyderabad: The Telangana Commission for Backward Classes reviewed the progress of caste-wise data collection of students studying in various educational institutions and flagged delays in the process.

The Commission held the review meeting on February 4, 2026, at its office. BC Commission Chairman G. Niranjan and members held detailed discussions with senior education officials.

Director of School Education Dr E. Naveen Nicholas, Secretary of the State Council of Higher Education Prof Sriram Venkatesh, Registrar of Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences Dr K. Nagarjuna Reddy, and Secretary of the Intermediate Education Department Krishna Aditya attended the meeting.

Commission members Rapolu Jayaprakash, Tirumalagiri Surender, Balalakshmi and Member Secretary Bala Maya Devi, IAS, also participated. Meanwhile, several departmental officers joined the review.

During the meeting, the BC Commission stated that delays in collecting student data were affecting effective policy planning. Therefore, the Commission directed all departments to treat the issue as urgent and submit the required information promptly.

Officials explained that caste-wise student data would help the government identify communities drifting away from education. As a result, departments could frame targeted measures to encourage such students to continue their studies.

Departments commit to data submission by March

Senior officials assured the Commission that they would immediately begin collecting the required information. Accordingly, they committed to submitting the complete data by March 2026.

In addition, the Secretary of the State Council of Higher Education said departments would start collecting caste-related details during admissions from the current academic year. He also clarified that authorities would capture the same information during entrance examinations in the coming academic year.

The BC Commission said the timely submission of accurate data would strengthen educational support systems for Backward Classes students across the State.
