Hyderabad: Congress senior leader Arham Adil backed stricter enforcement steps to combat drug abuse while praising Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s intensified crackdown, calling it essential to protect youth and society.

He said the Chief Minister had correctly identified the need for firm control and preventive strategies. He added that crime has evolved rapidly due to technology and artificial intelligence, making enforcement more complex.
He expressed concern that drug use is rising among educated youth. He warned that many capable students are falling into addiction, which is eroding productivity and future potential. At the same time, he appreciated the government’s push to promote sports and constructive activities to steer youth away from harmful habits, including excessive pub culture.
Adil proposed stricter policing methods. He suggested that police introduce special checkpoints for drug testing, similar to drunk-and-drive enforcement. He also called for heavy fines and legal prosecution against offenders. Furthermore, he stressed the need to ensure widespread availability of drug testing kits across police departments.

Highlighting Hyderabad’s sporting past, Adil said the city was once known as a hub of Indian football. He recalled that several players from Hyderabad represented India internationally, including seven members of the 1956 Olympic team. He said the renewed focus on football could revive that legacy.
He also welcomed inclusive sports initiatives. Efforts to engage youth from SC and ST communities, he said, would help discover talent across sections of society. According to him, such inclusion would strengthen the overall sports ecosystem.
Adil pointed out India’s underperformance in global sports despite its large population. He said systemic reforms and improved infrastructure are necessary. He welcomed the plan to establish the Young India Sports University under a public-private partnership model. He noted that involving sportspersons and industrialists in its governance would improve outcomes.
He also praised the government’s policy of rewarding sporting excellence. He cited appointments and incentives given to athletes such as Nikhat Zareen, Mohammed Siraj, and Deepthi Jeevanji. He said such recognition motivates youth to pursue sports seriously.
Adil further noted the Chief Minister’s personal involvement in sports. He said Revanth Reddy plays football whenever possible, which sets an example. He added that this hands-on approach sends a strong message to young people.
He concluded that a combined strategy of strict law enforcement and sports promotion would build a healthier society. He said this approach would guide Telangana’s youth towards discipline and progress.
