Almont-Kid Syrup banned after toxic chemical found

Hyderabad: Almont-Kid Syrup came under an urgent safety alert after the Telangana Drugs Control Administration warned that the product posed a serious threat to children’s lives.

Officials said Almont-Kid Syrup was not a cough medicine but a slow poison. They warned parents and caregivers to stop using the syrup immediately. The advisory followed laboratory findings that detected a highly toxic chemical in the medicine.

Earlier, more than 20 children died in Madhya Pradesh last year after consuming contaminated cough syrup. Subsequently, the Centre took action against the manufacturer and banned its exports. Against this backdrop, Telangana authorities moved swiftly after receiving fresh inputs.

Therefore, the Drugs Control Administration issued an emergency warning to protect public health. It cautioned that continued use of Almont-Kid Syrup could lead to severe health complications in children.

Almont-Kid Syrup found to contain ethylene glycol

Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of ethylene glycol in Almont-Kid Syrup. The Telangana Drugs Control Administration said it acted on an alert issued by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation East Zone, Kolkata.

Officials examined samples from batch number AL-24002 of Almont-Kid Syrup. The syrup was manufactured by Triduce Remedies, a Bihar-based pharmaceutical company. Test results showed the presence of ethylene glycol, which is highly poisonous.

Doctors warned that ethylene glycol could severely damage the kidneys and nervous system. They said even small quantities could prove fatal for children. Hence, authorities stressed that the syrup should not be consumed under any circumstances.

Meanwhile, officials advised consumers who purchased Almont-Kid Syrup to stop using it immediately. They asked parents to report any health complications linked to the syrup without delay. The Drugs Control Administration shared a toll-free helpline number, 1800-599-6969, for complaints and information.

Additionally, officials urged the public to remain alert while using cough syrups. They requested citizens to report any suspicious medicines to authorities promptly to prevent further harm to children.
