HYDERABAD: Telangana is making a major push towards clean energy, with the government unveiling an ambitious plan to generate 40,000 MW of renewable power by 2035. Presenting the 2025-26 budget in the Assembly, Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Bhatti Vikramarka emphasized the state’s commitment to sustainable energy sources, aiming to reduce fossil fuel dependency and ensure an uninterrupted power supply for all sectors.
A total of ₹21,221 crore has been allocated for the Energy Department, with a strong focus on solar, wind, and geothermal power projects.
Clean & Green Energy Policy – 2025
The government has introduced the Clean & Green Energy Policy – 2025, which aims to:
• Increase renewable energy capacity to 20,000 MW by 2030 and 40,000 MW by 2035.
• Encourage private sector investments in solar and wind energy projects.
• Expand solar-powered irrigation systems to support farmers and reduce reliance on conventional electricity.
• Develop energy storage solutions, including a 250 MW / 500 MWh Battery Energy Storage System in Shankarpally, to enhance grid stability.
• Promote geothermal energy projects in collaboration with Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) and Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TREDCO).
With these initiatives, Telangana aims to become one of India’s leading states in green energy adoption, ensuring environmental sustainability and energy security.
Ensuring Uninterrupted Power Supply
Telangana has one of the most efficient power distribution systems in the country, with minimal transmission losses. Despite peak power demand reaching 16,918 MW in 2024-25, the government has ensured an uninterrupted power supply to all sectors, including industries, agriculture, and households.
• ₹11,500 crore in subsidies has been allocated to power generation companies, ensuring continuity of the free electricity scheme for farmers.
• Under the Gruha Jyothi Scheme, 50 lakh households and 30,000 government educational institutions are receiving up to 200 units of free electricity, with a budget of ₹3,000 crore allocated for this initiative.
Reviving the Yadadri Thermal Power Plant
The Yadadri Thermal Power Plant (YTPS) in Nalgonda district has faced significant delays due to environmental clearance issues under the previous government. The Telangana government has now secured all necessary approvals, and:
• Two units of the Yadadri power plant have started operations.
• All five units are expected to be fully operational by May 2025, ensuring additional power supply stability.
India’s First Electricity Ambulance Service
In a first-of-its-kind initiative in India, the Telangana government has launched the Electricity Ambulance Service, designed to provide faster and more efficient response to power outages and electrical issues.
• Citizens can call the toll-free number 1912 to report power failures.
• Dedicated response teams equipped with transformers, thermal vision cameras, and repair tools will be dispatched immediately.
• 57 ambulances are currently operational in Hyderabad, with plans to expand the service statewide.
A Green Future for Telangana
With massive investments in renewable energy, improved power distribution, and innovative initiatives, Telangana is taking bold steps toward becoming a clean energy leader. The government’s focus on sustainability, energy security, and environmental conservation is expected to reduce carbon emissions, attract green investments, and create thousands of jobs in the renewable energy sector.
If executed effectively, Telangana’s Clean & Green Energy Policy – 2025 could serve as a model for other states, positioning Telangana as one of India’s most energy-efficient and environmentally conscious states.
