Hyderabad: Supreme Court judge and National Legal Services Authority Executive Chairman Justice Surya Kant inaugurated a drug de-addiction centre at Chanchalguda Central Prison, terming it a significant prison reform initiative by the Telangana jail department.
Speaking at the launch, Justice Surya Kant called for tighter intelligence surveillance on narcotics distribution networks in society. He said placing such facilities inside prisons enables targeted intervention and behavioural reform at the point of need.
Temporary Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court Justice Sujoy Paul said data from the prison department indicates that around 15% of inmates are linked to drug-related offences. He stressed that effective implementation of rehabilitation programmes within prisons can help reduce this share.
Justice Shyamsundar Kocherlakota, Chairman of the Telangana State Legal Services Authority, expressed hope that inmates will abandon addiction and transform their lives through such initiatives.
The event was attended by Telangana Home Secretary Anita Ramachandran, TGNAB Director Sandeep Shandilya, Prisons DG Dr. Soumya Mishra, and member secretaries of national and state legal services authorities Bharat Parashar and Panchakshari. IGs Rajesh and Murali Babu from the prison department were also present.
