Hyderabad: Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) Dr Jitender on Saturday underscored the importance of public trust in policing, urging Station House Officers (SHOs) to serve citizens with fairness and empathy. Addressing a review meeting at the DGP’s office, he stressed that delivering justice leaves an indelible mark—not only enhancing the department’s reputation but also earning the lasting respect of the public.

Citing examples from the United States and other countries where police are seen as community allies, Dr Jitender said that Telangana police must strive to reach a similar level of public engagement. He cautioned that any display of bias or misconduct by officers could lead to lasting negative perceptions. “If people feel they’ve been denied justice, they will never forget it,” he said.

Dr Jitender encouraged SHOs to ensure that every citizen who approaches a police station is treated fairly and leaves with the belief that justice has been served. He added that this approach not only strengthens the image of the police force but also prevents alienation between law enforcement and the public.

In light of the upcoming Miss World pageant being held in Hyderabad, the DGP instructed SHOs to ensure meticulous security and logistical arrangements in their respective jurisdictions. The event, being organised as a high-profile showcase by the Telangana government, presents an opportunity for the police to demonstrate professionalism at an international level, he said.

He also warned officers against negligence and misconduct, noting that lapses in duty could have wide-reaching consequences for both the department and the individual officers. “Let us not invite situations where apologies must be made for one person’s failure,” he remarked.

Dr Jitender acknowledged growing public comparisons between Indian and foreign police systems, particularly from youth who often admire international models. He urged officers to be proactive in serving justice, ensuring that the system in Telangana evolves into one that citizens trust and take pride in.

Additional DGP Mahesh M. Bhagwat, AIG Ramana Kumar, and DSP Satyanarayana also attended the review meeting.
