Hyderabad: Telangana recorded its highest-ever electricity demand and energy consumption in March 2025, according to official data reviewed this week. The state met a peak load of 17,162 MW on 20 March, surpassing last year’s high of 15,623 MW logged on 8 March 2024.
The annual increase 1,539 MW in just twelve months marks the sharpest jump so far, representing a 9.8% growth in maximum demand.
Energy supplied in a single day also hit a new record. On 18 March 2025, Telangana delivered 335.19 million units (MU) of electricity statewide. The previous record was 308.54 MU on 14 March 2024.
The southern region under TGSPDCL accounted for a substantial portion of this demand, supplying 222.57 MU on 20 March 2025 and managing a peak of 11,017 MW the same day. Last year’s figures for TGSPDCL stood at 202.45 MU (13 March 2024) and 9,910 MW (20 September 2024).
In contrast, TGNPDCL’s peak numbers were lower this year. Its energy supply dropped from 110.98 MU (9 August 2020) to 87.87 MU (1 April 2025), while maximum demand reduced from 5,993 MW (3 March 2023) to 4,768 MW (1 April 2025).
The Greater Hyderabad region also saw a slight dip. GHMC’s peak energy use dropped from 90.68 MU on 4 May 2024 to 89.54 MU on 24 April 2025. Its demand peak slipped from 4,352 MW (6 May 2024) to 4,190 MW (24 April 2025).
Despite the surging demand, power interruptions and complaints have dropped significantly over recent years. Officials noted that while demand keeps climbing, supply has been consistently upgraded to match growth patterns.
Projections by the Central Electricity Authority were largely met, with the state closing in on expected thresholds across key metrics.
