Hyderabad: BRS MLA and former minister Harish Rao on Saturday accused the Congress-led Telangana government of ignoring Andhra Pradesh’s plans to divert Godavari water through the Banakacharla project.
Addressing a press meet at Telangana Bhavan, Rao alleged that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy had failed to take a clear stand on the issue, despite the potential for significant losses to Telangana’s irrigation interests.
He said the Andhra Pradesh government is preparing to issue tenders for the Banakacharla project by the end of the month. Drawing parallels with the Pothireddypadu head regulator, Rao claimed Banakacharla was part of a broader plan to divert water without Telangana’s consent.
He criticised the state government for not convening an all-party meeting on the issue and accused Union ministers from Telangana of remaining silent.
Rao charged the Congress administration with lacking interest in irrigation and accused it of using the issue to antagonise the opposition rather than defend state interests.
He said that while Delhi appeared to support Andhra Pradesh in terms of funds and project approvals, Telangana’s leadership was inactive. He directly blamed Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar for not intervening, accusing the latter of making irrelevant statements instead of taking action.
