HYDERABAD: The crescent moon marking the beginning of Shavval-ul-Mukarram was sighted on Sunday evening, paving the way for Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on Monday. The sighting of the moon officially ends the month-long fasting of Ramadan and heralds the arrival of the festive occasion.
The announcement was made by a group of prominent Islamic scholars associated with the Central Ruiyat-e-Hilal Committee – Hyderabad Deccan. The Committee convened at the historic Hussaini Building near Moazzam Jahi Market and deliberated on reports of moon sightings from various parts of the country. After thorough verification, the committee confirmed the sighting of the crescent and declared Monday, March 31, as the first day of Shavval and the day of Eid.
Several reports of moon sighting were received from different locations in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and other parts of India, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. Based on these confirmations, the scholars reached a consensus on the commencement of Eid-ul-Fitr.
With the confirmation of the moon sighting, families began preparing traditional dishes, shopping for last-minute essentials, and planning for the morning Eid prayers.
In the Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, and Kuwait, Eid-ul-Fitr was observed on Sunday, as the crescent was sighted there a day earlier.
The Hyderabad Police and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials have made elaborate arrangements to ensure smooth conduct of Eid prayers at major congregational venues, including Eidgah Mir Alam, Mecca Masjid, and other large Eidgahs across the twin cities.
Eid-ul-Fitr is one of the most significant festivals for Muslims and is marked by prayers, charity, family gatherings, and festive meals. It also serves as an occasion to promote unity, forgiveness, and gratitude among the community.
