HYDERABAD: Manipur experienced two earthquakes within an hour on Wednesday, causing tremors across several northeastern states, including Assam and Meghalaya.
According to the Regional Seismological Centre in Shillong, the first earthquake occurred at 11:06 AM with a magnitude of 5.7. The epicenter was located 44 km east of Yairipok in Imphal East district at a depth of 110 km. Due to its intensity, the tremors were felt in multiple northeastern states.
An hour later, at 12:20 PM, a second earthquake of 4.1 magnitude struck. The epicenter was recorded at a depth of 66 km in Kamjong district, officials reported.
Buildings Develop Cracks Due to Tremors
Authorities stated that several buildings in Manipur developed cracks due to the tremors. In Thoubal district’s Wangjing Lamding, a school building housing relief camps for ethnic violence victims also suffered structural damage.
Officials are currently assessing the extent of damage caused by both earthquakes. No casualties have been reported so far.
