Hyderabad: Two unidentified persons, believed to be beggars, were burnt alive in LB Nagar late Sunday night after a high-tension power line fell on them while they were asleep on a footpath.
According to police and electricity department officials, the 11KV line snapped after an unknown vehicle rammed into an electric pole on Sagar Ring Road in LB Nagar around midnight. The live wire fell on the two victims who were sleeping near the Renuka Ellamma temple. A stray dog also died after getting entangled in the wire.
As soon as they were alerted, police and electricity department staff rushed to the spot, disconnected the power supply and brought the situation under control. The bodies were shifted to the Osmania Hospital mortuary. Efforts are on to identify the deceased.
Officials suspect that the polymer pin insulator rod on the pole may have given way, causing the wire to snap. Electricity department personnel are examining the exact cause of the accident.
LB Nagar MLA Devireddy Sudheer Reddy visited the scene on Sunday. He indicated that the incident appeared to have resulted from negligence by the electricity department.
