Hyderabad: Minister for Forest, Environment and Endowments Konda Surekha on Wednesday called on the Forest department to make the upcoming Vana Mahotsavam-2025 a grand festival that reaches every corner of Telangana. She emphasised the need for wide public participation and proper planning to ensure the plantation drive’s success under the leadership of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.
Unveiling the Vana Mahotsavam-2025 poster at her residence in Jubilee Hills, Surekha was joined by Telangana Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Dr. C. Suvarna, Chief Conservator of Forests Priyanka Varghese, and other senior officials.
She urged officials to learn from past experiences and coordinate efforts effectively this year. The Forest department presented a detailed roadmap for a massive plantation programme, scheduled to begin in the coming days.
Surekha stressed that planning must extend from the district level down to every village, making Vana Mahotsavam a participatory and result-oriented effort. The main plantation drives will be conducted intensively during the monsoon months of June, July, and August.
She highlighted that while Telangana had targeted planting 20.02 crore saplings in 2024 and achieved 95% of that goal by planting 19.04 crore, the target this year is 100% achievement. Every nursery at the village level will be activated to raise and distribute saplings locally, fostering a sense of ownership among communities.
Pointing to last year’s challenges, Surekha urged officials to avoid delays, shortages, and other issues that affected previous drives. She insisted that saplings reach every household and public institution on time.
Among the new initiatives, households will receive saplings to promote greenery at their doorsteps. A variety of species, including flowering plants like rose, hibiscus, and oleander, and fruit-bearing and medicinal trees like guava, custard apple, amla, black plum, drumstick, tulsi, pongamia, neem, tamarind, soapnut, toddy palm, and eetha palm, will be distributed. Priority planting areas include roadsides, lake bunds, schools, temples, anganwadis, hospitals, and both public and private spaces.
Acknowledging the early arrival of the monsoon this year, Surekha directed officials to capitalise on the opportunity by beginning plantation drives without delay. She also advised selecting species that best suit local soil and climate conditions to maximise survival rates.
The state aims to make Vana Mahotsavam-2025 a mass movement for ecological restoration, fostering a greener and healthier future for all.
2025… pic.twitter.com/zyY0PopBDq
