Hyderabad: The Telangana government awarded singer Rahul Sipligunj ₹1 crore as part of the Bonalu celebrations in the Old City, fulfilling a public assurance made by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy last year.
The Congress government cleared the proposal to grant the amount as a token of encouragement for Sipligunj’s achievements, including his global recognition for the Oscar-winning track ‘Naatu Naatu’.
CM Revanth Reddy had earlier announced ₹10 lakh for the singer in 2023 and pledged to increase the amount to ₹1 crore if Congress came to power. On Saturday, the commitment was formalised, with Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka reportedly approving the allocation during the Bonalu festivities.
The Chief Minister had recently reiterated his appreciation for the Hyderabad-based artist during the Gaddar Awards event. Despite not conferring a formal award at the time, he directed officials to ensure a significant gesture of recognition, which culminated in Saturday’s announcement.
Sipligunj, known for his distinct voice and youth following through playback hits and independent music, was hailed as an inspiration to Telangana’s aspiring artists.
