HYDERABAD: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has instructed officials to immediately release the draft of the Telangana Gig Workers Welfare Bill for public feedback. He directed that all suggestions, opinions, and objections received from the public should be seriously considered while finalising the bill.
These instructions were issued during a special meeting held at the Secretariat on Monday, which was attended by gig workers, their representative unions, and senior officials from various departments. Ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, government advisor V. Narendra Reddy, Vice-Chairman of the State Planning Commission Chennareddy, Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari, and Special Principal Secretaries Ramakrishna Rao, Jayesh Ranjan, and Sanjay Kumar were also present.
The Labour Department has drafted the “Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Bill” with the aim of ensuring job security, insurance coverage, and other basic rights for gig and platform workers across the state. During the meeting, officials presented a detailed overview of the bill’s key provisions to the Chief Minister.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy suggested several amendments to the existing draft and emphasised that the proposed legislation should prioritise the safety and welfare of workers. At the same time, it should foster a cooperative and amicable relationship between companies and aggregators.
He stated that the draft bill should be made available online to solicit public opinion, so that it can be shaped by input from all segments of society. Highlighting the fact that nearly four lakh gig workers are employed in services such as food delivery, transport, and package delivery in Telangana, the Chief Minister said it was essential to include diverse perspectives in the final draft.
He directed officials to revise the bill in light of public feedback and prepare the final version by 25 April. He further announced that the legislation should be implemented on 1 May—International Workers’ Day.
Revanth Reddy recalled that his government had pledged before the state elections to enact a law for the protection of gig workers. He noted that on 30 December 2023, the state government had issued orders introducing, for the first time in India, accident insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh for gig workers. He emphasised that the new law to be implemented in Telangana should serve as a model for the entire country.
