Prabhas Bhange was travelling from Mumbai to Pune on a train in March when he died mysteriously. Bhange, who earlier lived in Mumbai, had come to Mumbai and while returning home on the Siddheshwar Express he fell from the train as it reached the Vithalwadi Railway Station.
The death of Bhange, 24, who had come to the city to play Holi with his friends, remained unsolved until the Mumbai police caught a man who tried to snatch the mobile phone of a commuter on a local train.
The series of events began in the last week of March when Zahid Zaidi was taking a video on his phone while travelling on a train which passed through Kalyan. At that point, a man tried to snatch his mobile phone but Zaidi managed to fob him off. In the process, the mobile snatcher’s face was captured on his phone. Zaidi uploaded the video on social media platforms and soon the Kalyan Government Railway Police (GRP) swung into action.
Based on the video, the police identified the accused as Akash Jadhav, 27. It was while searching his residence that the police found another mobile phone. When they switched on the phone, they found it belonged to Bhange, who died after falling off the train on March 25.
After interrogating Jadhav, the police found he allegedly snatched Bhange’s phone as well and the Pune resident had fallen from the train while trying to retrieve the device. It was this fall that eventually led to Bhange’s death.
The Mumbai police then registered a case against Jadhav on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder following which he was arrested in the case.
