Hyderabad: A joint operation by Hyderabad’s civic authorities and Cantonment staff cracked down on encroachments around the Begumpet nala in Picket on Friday, razing several illegal structures built on the drain.
The demolition followed a thorough inspection of the nala and its surroundings by GHMC Commissioner Ranganath and Cantonment CEO Madhukar Naik on Thursday. Acting on their orders, enforcement teams moved in early Friday morning to clear the encroachments, which officials said were obstructing the free flow of rainwater and contributing to flooding issues in nearby colonies.
Locals said the structures had mushroomed over time, with makeshift extensions and small commercial establishments encroaching on the nala’s embankments. “It’s about time the authorities acted,” one resident noted, pointing to the chronic waterlogging in the area during monsoons.
GHMC and Cantonment officials said the crackdown would continue in phases to reclaim public land and restore the natural drainage system. “We’re committed to keeping the nala clear of any encroachments,” an official stated.
