Hyderabad: Cyber fraudsters are now targeting Hyderabad’s water board customers in a new scam involving fake messages threatening service disconnection.
In a recent spate of incidents, several consumers received alarming text messages claiming that their water connection would be cut off if unpaid bills weren’t cleared immediately. The messages, dressed up to look official, include a link to download an APK file—malicious software that can swipe personal data once installed.
The fraud came to light after a wave of complaints hit the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB). The board quickly issued a statement disowning the messages and urged people to steer clear of any suspicious links.
“These messages are not from us,” officials said. “We urge consumers not to engage with such fraudulent communications.”
Authorities have advised customers to directly contact water board officials if they receive any dubious notifications. “When in doubt, call us,” an official added, stressing the importance of caution in the face of rising cybercrime.
With cyber scams growing more sophisticated by the day, the water board has reiterated its commitment to public safety and urged all users to stay alert and verify any communication before acting.
