Hyderabad: A suspected case of food poisoning at the Government Mental Health Hospital in Erragadda has left over 70 patients seriously ill, with one of them—a man identified as Karan—succumbing on Tuesday.
Panic broke out when dozens of inmates began vomiting and complaining of severe stomach pain. Hospital staff scrambled to manage the situation as patients collapsed one after another. With conditions worsening, emergency teams rushed two of the most critical patients to Osmania General Hospital, where they continue to receive intensive care.
Collector Anudeep Durishetty visited the facility to assess the crisis first-hand, while a specialised medical team from Osmania was deployed to treat the 68 affected patients.
Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha was also briefed on the developments and has sought a detailed report. Officials say they are investigating food contamination as the likely cause but have not ruled out other possibilities.
