HYDERABAD: BJP Rajya Sabha MP and prominent OBC leader Dr K. Laxman has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to conduct an OBC census alongside the general population survey, calling it a historic move that reflects true commitment to inclusive governance.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP state office on Wednesday, Dr Laxman referred to Modi as the “modern Ambedkar” for his efforts to empower marginalised communities, particularly the Other Backward Classes (OBCs). He stated that the decision aligns with the Prime Minister’s vision of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, ensuring development for all sections of society.
Dr Laxman assured that the OBC enumeration would be carried out using a scientific and structured methodology. He said this would help in the equitable formulation of policies and distribution of resources based on reliable data.
He launched a scathing attack on the Congress party, accusing it of neglecting the issue during its six decades of rule. Despite repeated demands from BJP and other social justice advocates, he said, Congress governments had failed to implement the Mandal Commission recommendations in full.
Dr Laxman also criticised the caste survey conducted by the Telangana government, calling it politically motivated and scientifically flawed. He claimed it was designed to serve electoral interests rather than genuinely uplift backward communities.
The announcement comes amid growing national discourse on the need for accurate caste data to inform policy decisions, and BJP leaders are now positioning the Modi-led government as the one finally taking decisive action on this long-pending issue.
