Hyderabad: Political tensions flared in Borabanda on Wednesday night after Mohammed Sardar, a senior Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader, died by suicide, with his family blaming Congress corporator and former Deputy Mayor Baba Fasiuddin for alleged harassment and extortion.
Sardar, 50, who ran a medical shop and lived in SRT Nagar, jumped from the top of his under-construction, three-storey home partially razed recently by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) over building violations. According to his family, the demolition wasn’t just about civic rules it was the culmination of pressure from Fasiuddin, who switched allegiance from BRS to Congress earlier this year.
Family members allege that Fasiuddin had been demanding money to allow construction to continue and threatened to sic municipal authorities on Sardar when he didn’t pay up. The prolonged ordeal, they say, pushed Sardar into depression.
In the wake of his death, angry relatives and residents gathered outside the Borabanda Police Station, demanding Fasiuddin’s arrest and expulsion from Congress. Police officials at the scene promised a full investigation.
Deputy Commissioner of Police YVS Sudheendra confirmed the death, saying, “Sardar had climbed onto the building and jumped from there. The family members have raised certain allegations. Based on the complaint, we will register a case and take up investigation.”
The incident has deepened the rift between BRS and Congress in Hyderabad. So far, neither the Congress party nor Fasiuddin has responded publicly to the accusations.
