Woman accuses bank staff of fraud, damages ATM in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, January 11: A dispute over missing money escalated into vandalism at a Union Bank ATM in the Madhuranagar police station limits. A 35-year-old woman from Rahmatnagar, identified as a homemaker, allegedly damaged the ATM after accusing bank staff of fraud.

According to the police, the woman had recently sold a property in Suryapet, earning Rs 7 lakh. On Thursday, she visited the Union Bank branch to deposit the amount into her account. However, the cashier claimed that the money counted was Rs 21,000 short.

The disagreement led to a heated argument, with the woman insisting she had handed over the entire Rs 7 lakh. Unable to resolve the matter, she called the police through the Dial 100 service. Officers reviewed CCTV footage but found no evidence of misconduct or mismanagement by the bank staff.

On Friday morning, the woman returned to the bank and reportedly damaged the ATM deposit machine by throwing a heavy stone at it. Bank officials lodged a formal complaint, prompting the police to register a case and initiate further investigation.

Authorities are working to determine the cause of the initial discrepancy and the events leading to the ATM vandalism.
