Covid cases surge 58-fold in just 20 days across India

Hyderabad: A worrying spike in Covid-19 cases is sweeping across the country, with health authorities reporting a staggering 58-fold surge in the past three weeks. The national tally of active cases, which hovered at just 93 on May 16, has now jumped to 5,364 – sparking fresh concern among states and health officials alike

The virus is now present in 29 states and Union Territories and shows no sign of letting up. In the past 24 hours alone, 500 new cases have been confirmed — a steady upward trend that’s hard to ignore. Kerala continues to top the charts with 1,679 active cases, while Gujarat is grappling with 615. West Bengal, Delhi, and Maharashtra are also in the thick of it, logging 596, 592, and 548 active cases, respectively.

Even more troubling is the growing number of fatalities linked to new Covid variants. Since January, 55 deaths have been confirmed nationwide — with a jaw-dropping 53 of those recorded in just the past two weeks. On Thursday, Delhi reported two more deaths, one of them heartbreakingly a five-month-old baby. Kerala saw two deaths as well, while Karnataka and Punjab each reported one. Maharashtra remains the worst hit, with 17 Covid deaths so far.

Health authorities are keeping a close watch as the numbers climb, warning that the situation could get worse before it gets better.
