Hyderabad: After the remarkable success of the Indiramma Housing project in transforming rural communities, the Telangana government is now setting its sights on urban slums, aiming to provide secure housing for thousands of low-income families.
Revenue and Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy announced on Friday that the government plans to launch Indiramma Houses in urban areas using a G+3 model, designed to accommodate families living in the densely packed slums of Hyderabad.
Speaking at a review meeting at the Secretariat, Ponguleti stressed that the initiative would prioritise towns and cities across the state, starting with 16 slums identified in Hyderabad. “We’re determined to ensure that even the most neglected urban communities get a chance at a decent home,” he said.
The plan also includes expanding the project to towns like Warangal, Nizamabad, Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda, and Karimnagar, where slum dwellers continue to live in substandard housing.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to tribal welfare, the Minister revealed that 13,266 Indiramma Houses have been approved for the Chenchus, Kolam, Thoti, and Kondaredla tribes in the four ITDA regions of Bhadrachalam, Utnoor, Eturunagaram, and Munnanur. “Many of these families have waited for years to call a house their own,” he noted.
In addition, 8,750 houses have been allocated to residents in 16 ST constituencies, bringing the total number of Indiramma Houses approved for tribal communities across the state to 22,016.
Ponguleti urged officials to closely monitor the construction to ensure quality and timely completion. “This is about more than just bricks and mortar; it’s about dignity and opportunity,” he said, promising to fast-track housing allocation and construction in line with the government’s inclusive vision.
