Hyderabad: Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, launched a scathing attack on the state government over the appalling state of civic amenities in Hyderabad, even as the city contributes a whopping 70% of the state’s revenue. During a whirlwind tour of several colonies in the Secunderabad Lok Sabha constituency on Monday, the minister took stock of local problems, urging officials to fix them without delay.
Reddy, who visited localities in Jubilee Hills, Vengal Rao Nagar, and other areas, met with community representatives, basti committees, and residents to hear their grievances firsthand. Speaking to reporters later, he voiced his frustration, noting that even in villages, broken streetlights used to be replaced swiftly. “But look at Hyderabad today an international city where streetlights don’t even get installed on time. It’s a shameful testament to the government’s inefficiency,” he fumed.
Expressing concern over the state of public safety, Reddy pointed to the city’s CCTV cameras and command control centres, calling them little more than decorative showpieces. “These cameras are supposed to ensure security, but they’re just sitting there for the sake of it,” he remarked.
He further criticised the government’s failure to provide clean drinking water, reliable electricity, functional community halls, proper roads, and drainage facilities. “When a city that generates most of the state’s revenue is left in such neglect, it’s deeply worrying,” he warned.
Reddy cautioned that unless these neglected civic issues are addressed urgently, Hyderabad’s growth momentum could slow down considerably.
