HYDERABAD: A tragic incident unfolded in Old Malakpet on the night of 10 April when a long-standing family dispute over pension money escalated into violence, leaving a 68-year-old woman dead and her elder brother critically injured. The attacker, identified as 63-year-old Madan Rao, was arrested shortly after the incident.
According to Sub-Inspector Bharat Kumar, the attack occurred at Venkataramana Apartments in the Water Tank area of Malakpet Division. Madan Rao had reportedly been quarrelling with his siblings over their late father’s railway pension, which had been received by their mother, Anasuya, since his death in 2010.
The deceased, Raghupathi Rao, a retired railway employee, had nine children—five sons and four daughters. Tensions within the family had been simmering over the pension’s distribution, culminating in a violent outburst from Madan Rao on Wednesday night.
During a heated argument, Madan allegedly lost control and attacked his siblings with a knife. His sister Lakshmi, aged 68, sustained multiple stab wounds—four to the abdomen and three to the chest—and died on the spot. His elder brother Sudarshan, aged 70, was also seriously injured and is now in critical condition at a local hospital.
One of their sisters, who witnessed the horrifying scene, immediately alerted the police. Officers from Chaderghat police station responded swiftly, apprehended Madan Rao, and transferred Lakshmi’s body to Osmania General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Police have registered a case and initiated a thorough investigation into the incident.
