Dispur, January 7: A coal mine in Assam’s Dima Hasao district flooded on Monday, leaving around 15 workers feared trapped, according to employee accounts. Official confirmation of the number of trapped individuals is still awaited.
The incident occurred in the Assam Coal Mine located in the 3 Kilo area of Umrangso. Reports suggest the mine, identified as a “rat mine,” filled with approximately 100 feet of water. Rescue teams are using two motor pumps to remove the water.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the situation in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Workers are trapped in a coal mine at Umrangso. The district collector, SP, and my colleague Kaushik Rai are reaching the site. We have sought the Army’s assistance in the rescue efforts.”
Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have arrived at the scene and are actively participating in the rescue operation.
The situation remains critical as efforts to pump out water continue. Authorities are closely monitoring the rescue process while ensuring all possible resources are deployed to save the trapped workers.
